Remembering CJ

My mother’s younger sister died this morning. It’s hard to believe that CJ (Carol Jean McGhee Garriott) is gone. Her vibrant personality and enthusiasm for life gave the family the feeling that she would be around for years and years. She had a pixie smile that led strangers to underestimate her sheer determination and strength of character. She usually got what she wanted.

She was 88 and at the hospital for what was expected to be a simple operation to remove a kidney stone. Sadly, something went wrong. She is the last of my aunts and uncles, so that generation is gone on both sides of the family.

  1. I’m sorry for the loss of your aunt. My mom is the last of seven siblings, a bulwark against the end of her generation of our family. There’s something consoling about even one sibling remaining and an emptiness when only memories do.
